The fide test in brief
FIDE is the acronym for « Français, Italiano, Deutsch en Suisse » (French, Italian, German in Switzerland). It is the official Swiss test, commissioned by the State Secretariat for Migration, which assesses the oral and written language skills. It is intended for anyone over the age of 16 who wishes to obtain a residence permit (B, C, anticipated C) or naturalisation.
Language skills for residence permits and naturalisation
The required levels are as follows :
- Permit B : A1 oral
- Permit C : A2 oral and A1 written
- Anticipated permit C : B1 oral and A1 written
- Naturalisation : B1 oral and A2 written
The language levels of the fide test (A1, A2, B1) correspond to those of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Test structure
It is divided into two parts:
- « Speaking and understanding» : This test lasts approximately 40 minutes. In the first part, «speaking», you introduce yourself and communicate about everyday situations in Switzerland. In the second part, «understanding», you listen to audio recordings and answer specific questions, either by pointing to pictures or by responding orally.
- « Reading and writing» : You have 60 minutes to complete this test, which combines two tasks (comprehension and production) for each module (3). These tasks are based on the same scenario, which corresponds to a scene from everyday life in Switzerland.
The test is progressive in terms of level : the further you progress through the modules, the higher the level and therefore the difficulty.
